In this article, I'm thrilled to share our incredible 4-day adventure in the Atacama Desert in Chile, where we combined stunning sightseeing with outdoor activities, adding a sporty challenge to make the experience truly unique.

Join me as I take you through the highlights of this mineral paradise, culminating in an unforgettable experience as we climb the Cerro Toco volcano, pushing our limits along the way.

The Atacama Desert is a unique landscape on Earth, renowned for its otherworldly beauty and extreme conditions. Located in Northern Chile, it is one of the driest desert in the world, where rainfall is so scarce that some areas haven’t seen rain for centuries.

With stunning vistas, high-altitude lagunas, and surreal rock formations like the Valle de la Luna, the Atacama offers a unique combination of dramatic landscapes and rich biodiversity, making it a must-visit destination for adventurers and nature lovers alike.

Here's our 4-day adventure!

Day 1: Wandering Valle de la Luna

Morning stroll in San Pedro town

As you arrive in San Pedro de Atacama, you’ll be instantly captivated by the charming atmosphere of this small desert town, renowned for its adobe buildings, cobblestone streets, and clay houses.

It is a popular tourist destination thanks to its central location and proximity to a variety of unique geological and historical sites. Its a good time to check in your hotel and then go for walk on the Main street.

Afternoon sightseeing of Valle de la Luna

Around 3:30pm head to Valle de la Luna (Valley of the Moon) for a spectacular first adventure..The unique landscape of lunar-like terrain, salt formations, and geologocal features will leave you in awe.

There are four key points of interest within the valley that you don't want to miss, including:

  1. Cerro Medanoso (The Sand Dune): It's a large sand dune that rises in the middle of reddish-orange canyons, providing an excellent spot for watching sunsets. It’s also our favorite spot in Valle de la Luna. There’s a one-hour loop trail that takes you up to a ridge, offering the most breathtaking views of the canyons and the dune. It felt like we were right in the heart of a Dune movie scene!

  2. El Anfiteatro (The Amphitheater): It's a natural rock formation that resembles a large amphitheater. The surrounding cliffs create an acoustically unique space, and the view from this area is particularly striking at sunset, when the changing light adds dramatic color to the landscape.

  3. La Cueva de Sal (Salt Cave): It's a cave-like structure made entirely of salt deposits. You can walk through this cave and along the path to experience the unique white crystalline formations, just like if snow had been sprinkled on the ground!

  4. Las Tres Marias (The Three Marias): This is a formation of three distinct rock pillars that stand tall in the valley. These formations are easily recognizable and are often photographed due to their striking appearance, created by erosion over time. Its a little too crowded for us ... but you will surely make up your own mind!

As the sun begins to set, the colors of the valley shift dramatically, creating a stunning view as the mountains are bathed in golden light. Enjoy the peace and beauty of the desert as the landscape changes.

Evening diner in a Chilean restaurant

It's time to return to San Pedro for a relaxing dinner and rest after a first day exploring the desert. There are plenty of dining options, but we loved the Andean atmosphere of the Chilean landmark restaurant, Adobe Café! (check for links at the end of this article)

Day 2: Exploring the Altiplanic Lagoons Fauna & Flora

The second day is a full-day road trip across the high plateau of the Atacama. You'll gradually ascend from 2,500m/ 8,200ft to over 4,000m/ 13,130ft above sea level, but without the winding roads we’re used to in the Alps. The road is very straight, making the ascent feel deceptively easy!

Tips: Make sure you prepare your own snack for lunch breaks and lots of water. There are no restaurants on the way! You may ask you hotel you arrange that for you and get some dry fruits in local grocery stores.

Morning stop at the Flamingo National Reserve

After breakfast, embark on a full-day excursion to the Altiplanic Lagoons of Miscanti, Miniques and Piedras Rojas. The drive is easy and you can easily plan it yourself!

Half way, you can make an hour stop to visit the Los Flamingos National Reserve at the Chaxa Lagoon.

The salt flats here are home to a large population of flamingos, and you can spend time observing these magnificent birds in their natural habitat.

The vast white landscape of salt, the vibrant blue water of the lagoon, and the flamingos make for incredible photo opportunities.

Then make your way to Socaire Village: It is a small Andean village where you will have to check-in by showing your online tickets before heading to the Lagoons, another 30 minutes drive. So make sure to arrive a least an hour before your actual time slot. (link to online booking below)

Afternoon ascend to the altiplanic lagoons

Once you get your tockets, you will continue your journey along a picturesque dirt road, heading towards the Miscanti and Miñiques Lagoons.

These high-altitude lagoons lie at over 4,000 meters /13,130 feet above sea level and are framed by snow-capped volcanoes. Along the way, you might spot vicuñas and other wildlife. Make sure to carry some warm clothes with you!

If you have enough time and energy, drive one more hour to extend your trip to Piedras Rojas (Red Stones), a stunning area where the earth is rich in reddish basaltic formations. A short trail will lead you to the picturesque lagoon surrounded by unique geological features.

Evening back to San Pedro

From Piedras Rojas, it takes approximately 2,5 hours to get back to San Pedro where you will enjoy the serenity of the town after a day full of exploration.

For dining options, try another of our favourite in town : Italian style restaurant called Pulperia!

Day 3: Soaking in Puritama Hot Springs & Cejar Salt Lagoon

Today is a day to unwind and relax in the hot springs and salt lagoons near San Pedro. You can take it at your own pace, without any rush. The whole family will love it!

Morning unwind in hot springs

Begin the day early with a visit to the Puritama Hot Springs, nestled in a deep canyon surrounded by desert landscapes 30 minutes drive from San Pedro.

The Puritama Hot Springs, which means Water (Puri) and Hot (tama), have a temperature between 28 ° and 31 ° celcius, suitable for the whole family.

Its water has a significant concentration of minerals, including calcium, magnesium, sodium and boron, all revitalizing elements for the body and mind.

The elevated walkway that runs parallel to the river provides access to the thermal pools. Soak in the rejuvenating waters and enjoy the tranquility of the location.

Tips: Make sure to book your ticket online for a specific date (see links below)

Afternoon bath & float in salt lagoon

In the afternoon, visit Cejar Lagoon, a high-altitude saltwater lagoon located near the Salar de Atacama. The water is so saline that you can easily float without effort, offering a unique and relaxing experience.

Reminder: Booking your entrance in advance is also required (check link below)

Evening

For your 3rd night in San Pedro, there is a nice restaurant called La Plaza on the main square where they serve chilean/international cuisine. It's just a short walk from the main street. There is also a delicious ice cream shop called Cacao Sabores close to the central square.

Day 4: Hiking Cerro Toco Volcano

When we travel as a family, I like to add a little sporty challenge to create a unique moment. This time, we decided to hike up Cerro Toco at 5,600m / 18,373ft above sea level with the kids! The trail was fantastic, and the views were unforgettable.

Early Morning hike the Cerro Toco

Prepare for an memorable adventure as you head out with your mountain guide early in the morning to tackle the Cerro Toco volcano. It’s a 45-minute drive from San Pedro, followed by a dusty road winding uphill. You’ll begin the hike at 5,100m (16,732ft) !

Towering at 5,600 meters / 18,372 ftabove sea level, this is one of the highest peaks you can hike in the region. While the climb is not technically difficult with around 500m/1,640ft of altitude gain, the altitude makes each step a challenge.

As you ascend, you’ll be rewarded with stunning views of the surrounding desert, the border between Chile and Bolivia, and the majestic volcano chain that stretches across the horizon.

The mountain guide will help you pace the climb and will pause frequently to show some breathing techniques (similar to yoga!)

Reaching the summit is a celebration! It's higher than the Everest base camp! (5,364m/17,598ft)Take time to enjoy the panoramic views and appreciate the beauty of the Andean mountains. On a clear day, you’ll have views extending into Bolivia, with volcanoes like Licancabur and Laskar dominating the landscape.

Midday

Descend and return to San Pedro de Atacama, where you can relax after your challenging and rewarding hike. We've enjoyed a light snack at the hotel to restore.

If you are interested in hiking other volcanoes, the guide can take you to Licancabur, Pili and Lascar volcanoes with some planning ahead!

After a good rest, you might want to check out the Meteorites Museum providing a very informative exhibition on those 'alien' stones found in the atacama desert. Alternatively the Gustavo le Paige Museum is a fascinating archaeological museum displaying anthropological artifacts.

Evening

Enjoy your final evening in San Pedro, reflecting on the incredible experiences you’ve had in the Atacama Desert.

This 4-day itinerary combines relaxation and adventure, offering ample opportunities to discover the natural wonders of the Atacama Desert while indulging in exciting activities. It’s been an incredibly fascinating journey, filled with countless sights and experiences. The mineral-rich, moon-like landscape of the Atacama Desert is one-of-a-kind, and we discovered just how much there is to explore here. Climbing the volcano was a truly off-the-beaten-path experience, one not typically highlighted in standard travel guides, making our trip all the more unique.

I hope this article has provided you with insightful information to help plan your next trip!

Cheers !
